Coach Mac Memorial
Monday, March 28 Altamonte CrossFit & Sports Performance will be hosting the annual Coach Mac Memorial weightlifting competition in honor of the man who started it all, Bill “Coach Mac’ McDaniel.
An imposing presence in Florida's weightlifting galaxy, McDaniel was a strong coach who inspired his athletes. "He believed that training, and being prepared, and working every day were great lessons of life for everyone. He just loved sports and was so generous with his time," said Joan McDaniel, ticking off the sports her husband loved -- football, wrestling and weightlifting.
Widely known as "Coach Mac," McDaniel coached the U.S. weightlifting team in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
He retired from Lake Mary High School and moved to Bat Cave where he died July 28, 2001 in Hendersonville, N.C., after a long bout of diabetes.
We welcome all to come out and support the competitors between 10am-4pm, April 2 at Lake Brantley High School. The competition will be run by Danny Camargo, Coach Mac’s last protégé.

I had the honor and privilege to have been coached by Coach Mac. He had a no nonsense coaching style, if you don't want to lift..."go kick in the grass." He is a technical master, able to see the smallest nuance in each lift. Amazingly he would come to the gym, and appear to lay down and take a nap in the legpress machine. But as soon as you missed a lift, he would tell you exactly what you did wrong (you kicked it, you didn't finnish the pull, you were on your toes, etc) by the SOUND of the lift!!!! Absolutly no exaggeration, Coach Mac could literally coach with his eyes closed. I'm sorry I was unable to make it to his memorial event but encourage all to carry on his proud legacy. He was great coach who made great athletes and in process made great people.
Yes sir, thanks for the post Joe.
